Industrial temperature switches
A temperature switch, also known as thermostat, is a temperature sensor, which switches an electrical contact (open or close) when fluid temperature reaches a set threshold.
Therefore, industrial temperature switches monitor fluid temperature and trigger an electrical response (on/off signal) when the preset threshold is reached. This signal can be used to inform low or high temperature, trigger alarms, or start machines.
Industrial temperature sensors are critical components for controlling heating and cooling processes in several applications, such as oil hydraulics, automotive, radiators, heat exchangers, lubrication systems, domestic appliances, etc.
Bimetallic thermostats
A temperature switch works without any power supply, being its electrical contacts potential-free.
The industrial bimetallic thermostat includes a bimetallic disc, which changes shape instantly from concave to convex when it is heated above its activation temperature. The bimetallic disc changes back to its initial shape when it cools down below its activation temperature. This change of shape switches mechanically the electrical contact of the thermostat.
The activation temperature of the bimetallic disc is the temperature threshold of the thermostat; therefore, the temperature threshold is not adjustable and has to be defined for each thermostat.
Euroswitch series 506, 525 and 507 are industrial bimetallic thermostats with quick opening contacts. These temperature switches are in the market since many years, proving to be robust and reliable.
Hysteresis of a bimetallic thermostat
The hysteresis (or switching differential) is the difference between the switching point when temperature is rising (turn-on temperature), and the switching-back point when temperature is falling (turn-off temperature). The hysteresis of a Euroswitch temperature switch is inherent to its design and construction.
Materials of a temperature sensor
Materials used in a temperature sensor will depend on the fluid type (media), which is used.
Electrical contacts of temperature switches
A bimetallic thermostat can have a normally open (NO), normally closed (NC), or changeover (SPDT) electrical contacts.
Maximum voltage and current have to be respected, in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
It is highly recommended to use an electrical relay to separate the control circuit (where the temperature sensor operates), from the power circuit with its bigger loads and currents.
Responsibility in selection of temperature sensors
Fluid compatibility cannot be generalized as it depends on the materials used by the manufacturer. Provided compatibility information is a starting point, not a guarantee. Please consider field testing for critical applications.
For any specific application, testing the suitability of a temperature sensor rests under the user’s responsibility.
